Harvey Elliott Sets Liverpool Transfer Deadline as Iraola Era Begins
Elliott Sets Liverpool Transfer Deadline Under Iraola

Harvey Elliott is at a crossroads over his Liverpool future, with the winger setting a 'deadline' to assess his prospects under new manager Andoni Iraola before committing to a move away. The 23-year-old endured a frustrating loan spell at Aston Villa last season, making only nine appearances after an obligatory purchase clause failed to trigger.

Failed Villa Loan Raises Questions

Elliott's season-long loan to Aston Villa included a clause that would have made the move permanent after 10 appearances. However, he managed only nine outings for Unai Emery's side, with just four of those coming between January and May. Villa decided against signing him, leaving Elliott in limbo.

This setback has stalled his development, but a new era at Anfield under Iraola offers a fresh start. The Athletic reports that Elliott will wait until closer to the new campaign before making a final decision on his future.

Iraola's Open-Door Policy

Iraola, who joined Liverpool from Bournemouth, has indicated every player will be treated as a new signing. "For me, and I will tell them, [they] are all new signings. For me, you are all new signings, and I think we have a lot of quality in our squad, and [I'm] really looking forward to working with them," Iraola said earlier this summer.

With many Liverpool stars away at World Cup 2026, Elliott has a rare opportunity to impress Iraola in pre-season training. The manager added, "We've analysed Liverpool a lot. Possible weaknesses, the strengths. I think we have a very good squad. There is still work to do, but right now, for me the thing is to value especially the players that we have right now in the squad."

Elliott's Previous Success Under Slot

Elliott enjoyed a productive first season under former boss Arne Slot, contributing a joint-career high of five Premier League goals as Liverpool won the title. However, a flurry of summer signings in 2025 convinced the player that his search for first-team minutes was better served elsewhere.

That may still be the case, but Iraola's willingness to give everyone a clean slate could change Elliott's mind. Liverpool have less than two weeks before reuniting for pre-season, and the winger will be eager to avoid repeating last season's lack of progress.

World Cup Impact

Germany's shock exit at the hands of Paraguay means Florian Wirtz will be available sooner after a holiday, while Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk are also out after the Netherlands lost to Morocco. This frees up more training time for Elliott to prove his mettle.

Elliott will have ample opportunity to demonstrate his value in the coming weeks before any final call on his future. However, he'll be keen to make up for lost time after an unfortunate contract situation robbed him of a year's worth of progress.
