Retired Couple Turns House-Sitting into Lucrative Lifestyle
One retired couple has unveiled how they generate earnings and explore more of the United Kingdom by engaging in professional home-sitting. Barbara and Lawrence Blackwood, aged 72 and 75, initially embarked on home-sitting in 2017 as a means to remain active and purposeful during their retirement years.
What Home-Sitting Entails
Home-sitting involves caring for someone's residence while they are absent, often including the responsibility of looking after pets. Barbara, a former administrative secretary, and Lawrence, an ex-police officer, now undertake approximately one home sit per month, resulting in them being away from their own home for nearly half of the year.
Barbara stated: "After retiring, we didn't want to simply sit around. Home-sitting really fit the bill perfectly for us."
Financial Benefits and Compensation
Home-sitters receive a minimum payment of £333.06 for a two-week assignment without pets, while assignments involving two dogs and a cat pay £367.92 for the same duration. The role demands around one hour and forty-five minutes of daily duties and includes a daily food allowance. Travel expenses are fully reimbursed, covering both initial meetings and journeys to and from assignments.
Additionally, home-sitting has enabled the couple, who reside in Perthshire, Scotland, to save money on their utility bills, particularly during the cold winter months. Barbara estimates that on a winter assignment lasting approximately three to four weeks, they save around £47 per month. Over the period from September to April, they save an average of £31 monthly.
Barbara explained: "Obviously, the savings aren't as substantial in the summer months, and in Scotland during winter, we can't turn the heating off completely."
Travel and Lifestyle Advantages
The couple has journeyed extensively throughout Scotland, visiting numerous locations they might never have explored otherwise. Lawrence remarked: "We've been all over Scotland and loved every place we've been to. We've looked after a wide variety of animals and enjoyed every sit. The flexibility and variety are what make it so special."
He added: "It's like a mini break—a self-catering holiday. There are responsibilities involved, but it's all rewarding and satisfying. We really enjoy knowing that we're enabling someone to go on a well-deserved holiday without worrying about their pets."
Commitment to Pet Care and Repeat Assignments
Barbara emphasised that their primary focus is always the well-being of the animals under their care. She said: "We see our role as making sure pets feel safe, secure, and comfortable in their own routine."
After nearly a decade of home-sitting, they now perform many repeat assignments, with one family consistently welcoming them back since their start in 2017. Barbara concluded: "We've never looked back. It's given us a lifestyle we truly love."
