Wildfires Near Oil Sands Threaten Global Supply

Seven active wildfires are burning near major oil sands sites in northern Alberta, raising fears of production disruption in a region that supplies a significant share of the world's crude oil. Canada, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, concentrates the bulk of its output in the boreal forest of northern Alberta. Wildfires, historically common in this environment but exacerbated by climate change, have become a recurring threat to Canadian oil operations.

Current Situation

As of Sunday, approximately seven blazes were active in the Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche areas, with some fires within 20 kilometres (12.43 miles) of key oil sands facilities, including Cenovus Energy's Christina Lake and Canadian Natural Resources's Jackfish. A forecast for heavy rain was expected to assist firefighters throughout the day, and an evacuation alert issued on Saturday for the nearby community of Conklin was lifted on Sunday. While no other communities were under immediate threat, fire officials warned that the risk of new fires remains "extreme" in the Fort McMurray area due to warm, dry conditions.

Impact on Production

The ongoing wildfire risk introduces uncertainty into production forecasts for the spring and summer. In 2025, fires forced Canadian oil companies to temporarily shut in approximately 344,000 barrels per day of oil sands production, representing about 7 per cent of the country's total crude oil output. In May 2023, companies shut in at least 319,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, or 3.7 per cent of Canada's total production, as over 100 wildfires burned in Alberta.

Historical Context

The most extreme example occurred in 2016, when a massive wildfire destroyed parts of Fort McMurray, forcing the evacuation of thousands of oil sands workers. At the disaster's peak, companies reduced oil output by a million barrels per day. As climate change continues to intensify wildfire seasons, the industry faces ongoing challenges to maintain stable supply amid global energy demands.
