Amy Schumer Sells Brooklyn Townhouse at $1.25m Loss Amid Divorce
Amy Schumer sells Brooklyn home at a loss during divorce

Comedian and actress Amy Schumer has finalised the sale of her luxurious Brooklyn townhouse, taking a substantial financial hit on the property as her divorce from husband Chris Fischer proceeds. The four-storey residence in the coveted Brooklyn Heights neighbourhood sold for $11 million, which is $1.25 million less than the $12.25 million she paid for it in 2022, according to reports from The Real Deal.

A Historic Home with Silver Screen Pedigree

The five-bedroom property, constructed in 1829, is not just a prime piece of New York real estate but also a slice of cinematic history. It was famously featured in the 1987 Oscar-winning film Moonstruck, starring Cher, with scenes shot on the sidewalk outside and within the townhouse's kitchen. Spanning 5,568 square feet, the Federal-style home occupies a prized corner lot and boasts original features including dark marble-mantled fireplaces, crown mouldings, and hand-carved trim.

Schumer and Fischer, who share a six-year-old son, first listed the property in March of this year for $14 million, later reducing the asking price by $1.25 million just two months on. At the time, Schumer told the Wall Street Journal the move was motivated by a desire to relocate to Manhattan for their son's schooling, describing the Brooklyn Heights neighbourhood as "a dream to live in."

Sale Coincides with End of Seven-Year Marriage

The completion of the sale in late November aligns closely with Schumer's recent public confirmation that her seven-year marriage to chef Chris Fischer is ending. The couple tied the knot in 2018. Schumer took to Instagram to address speculation, stating the split had "nothing to do with weight loss or autism," referencing her own well-documented weight loss and Fischer's autism diagnosis.

A close friend of the comedian suggested to the Daily Mail that Schumer's perspective had shifted, noting, "Amy has changed since losing weight, she is much lighter in her spirit, more easy going. I think she wants more out of life."

Property Features and Prestigious Locale

The townhouse offered a blend of historic charm and modern luxury. Key amenities included:

  • A custom kitchen with vintage wood cabinets, wide-planked floors, and a LaCanche range.
  • Three full bathrooms and one half bathroom.
  • A private garden and gated parking.
  • A restored mansard roof and a massive wine cellar.

Its location in one of New York's most prestigious enclaves meant Schumer's neighbours included A-list actors such as Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany, Matt Damon, and Oscar Isaac. The buyer has been identified as Michael Saltzman, a television writer known for Murphy Brown.

Despite the financial loss on the sale, the transaction closes a chapter for Schumer as she navigates her new personal and professional life separate from Fischer. The couple had consulted an architect to redesign the backyard with turf for their son, indicating the family-oriented plans they once held for the historic home.
