In a dramatic turn of events, a couple featured on the popular Channel 4 show A Place In The Sun refused to sign their property contract after receiving a nasty shock once filming had concluded. The incident unfolded during the latest episode of A Place In The Sun: What Happened Next?, where property expert Ben Hillman revisited Whitney and Rose in Punta Prima, Menorca, to check on their Spanish apartment.
Dream Home Purchase
The couple originally appeared on the show four years ago, searching for their ideal home with a budget of £90,000. They successfully purchased a two-bedroom apartment in Punta Prima for £80,825, with an additional option to buy the garage for £8,500. During Ben's recent visit, they discussed the total costs, revealing that with all fees and the garage included, the final amount exceeded £100,000.
Renovation Costs and Agent Support
Whitney disclosed that they have spent approximately €4,500 on renovations since buying the property. This included installing brand new boilers and rewiring the entire apartment due to outdated electrical systems, which required certification. When Ben inquired about finding reliable tradespeople, Whitney praised their agent, who became a close friend and facilitated connections with electricians and other professionals, describing her assistance as invaluable.
Contract Refusal Over Garage Clutter
Despite the smooth process aided by their agent, the sale nearly collapsed due to an unexpected issue. One of the purchase conditions was clearing out the garage, which was filled with excessive belongings. Upon arrival, the couple discovered the garage still contained a significant amount of items, prompting them to refuse signing the contract.
Whitney explained, "We said we're not going to sign because we don't know how to get rid of all this stuff or what the potential costs could be." In a remarkable gesture, the agent personally intervened, using bags and making three car trips to clear the garage herself, ensuring the deal could proceed.
Ben's Reaction and Show Context
Ben was highly impressed by the agent's dedication, noting she went "over and above" to resolve the situation. This episode follows another segment where Ben expressed amazement at a couple's four-year property transformation in Lanzarote, highlighting the show's focus on post-purchase updates and renovations.
In that case, Nicola and Paul, who appeared in November 2020 with a £180,000 budget, bought an apartment they loved after an accepted offer. During a revisit, Ben was stunned by their extensive renovations, remarking that the property felt completely new despite retaining its original layout.
