Pippa Middleton and her husband, James Matthews, are at the centre of a contentious planning dispute involving a road on their Berkshire estate, which local residents assert is a public footpath. The entrance to Mill Lane on their Barton Court estate was closed with a gate and railings after Mr Matthews acquired the property in 2022, with an electric gate installed in October of that year.
Council Designation and Local Opposition
West Berkshire Council has designated the lane as a public right of way following an application by West Berkshire Ramblers. This decision is now being challenged by the estate, leading to a formal public inquiry. Local residents have provided evidence to the inquiry, arguing that the lane serves as a vital link for navigating the village of Kintbury and offers a safer alternative to what they describe as a "dangerous road."
Privacy and Security Concerns
The estate contends that the route has always been private and that its public use would cause significant privacy and security issues. A public inquiry by the Planning Inspectorate is scheduled for 14 May to hear the challenge, where both sides will present their arguments.
This legal battle highlights ongoing tensions between property owners and community access rights in rural areas. The outcome could set a precedent for similar disputes across the region, affecting how public footpaths are managed and contested.
