The former Central Club on Bath Street in Southport, which operated as a snooker club and bar, could be redeveloped into seven 'luxury flats' following a planning application submitted to Sefton Council. The venue closed in 2025, according to planning documents, and previously hosted functions such as weddings, anniversaries, and karaoke nights.
Historic Conservation Area Considerations
The site lies within Southport’s Resort Area and Promenade Conservation Area, requiring the development to respect the historic and architectural significance of the surrounding streets. The applicant, Sri & Jays Limited, stated that the proposal is 'carefully designed to ensure it does not detract from the special interest of the Conservation Area'. The building's external scale and design will largely remain unchanged, with upgraded windows and doors to match neighbouring properties. A small rear extension is planned for the second storey.
Housing Contribution and Sustainability
The applicant emphasised that converting the existing redundant building is the most sustainable long-term use, as it avoids developing undeveloped land. The flats would help meet local housing requirements, particularly for young professionals and retired persons seeking homes in the area. According to the planning documents, the street was originally built for residential use, so the change is in keeping with the surroundings.
Flat Layout and Parking Changes
The proposed flats will feature open-plan kitchen and living rooms, with two or three bedrooms, some en-suite. Two off-road parking spaces will be lost, but Sri & Jays noted that traffic to and from the building is expected to decrease due to the change of use. Online reviews of the former venue described it as 'very friendly', 'good for functions', and an 'excellent place to go for karaoke'.
