The BBC has confirmed that Clara Amfo and DJ Spoony will temporarily take over Trevor Nelson's afternoon show on BBC Radio 2 after the veteran presenter announced he is stepping back to focus on his health. Nelson, 62, revealed on Friday, June 26, that he would be taking time away from his role, which airs weekdays from 2pm to 4pm, following a routine check-up that led to follow-up tests.
Trevor Nelson's Health Announcement
In an Instagram post, Nelson thanked his followers for their concern and explained his decision. "I wanted to let my followers, radio listeners and all my Soul Nation party-people know that I'm going to be taking a little break from my work commitments," he wrote. "Some of you may already have noticed that I've not been on my daily Radio 2 slot this week. After a routine check-up I was advised to have some follow up tests. As a result, I will be taking some further time off." He emphasized the importance of dealing with facts, not speculation, and said he is concentrating on getting better and returning to the mic and decks.
Clara Amfo Steps In First
Clara Amfo will sit in for Nelson for the week commencing June 29, hosting the afternoon show from 2pm to 4pm Monday through Friday. Amfo, a well-known BBC Radio 1 presenter, will provide a familiar voice for listeners during Nelson's absence.
DJ Spoony Takes Over from July 6
Starting July 6, DJ Spoony will take over the afternoon slot until further notice. Spoony will temporarily move from his late-night show, The Good Groove, which airs from 10pm to midnight. To cover Spoony's late-night slot, Radio 1 star and former I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! contestant Melvin Odoom will fill in on The Good Groove.
Support from Colleagues
Well-wishes have poured in for Nelson. Richie Anderson, who had been filling in for Nelson, said on air: "Sending all the love in the world to our Trevor, we’ve got your back buddy." Lorna Clarke, the BBC's director of music, added: "Everyone at BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1Xtra wishes Trevor a very speedy recovery and we all look forward to him returning to his shows whenever he is ready."
Nelson has not disclosed specific details about his health condition but has assured fans he is focused on recovery. The BBC has not announced a definitive return date for the presenter.
