Brits Save £320 Yearly with Daily Money Habits

A poll of 2,000 adults has found that Britons who maintain consistent money management routines saved an average of £320 over the past year, with smart meters also playing a key role in reducing household energy costs.

The survey, conducted by OnePoll, revealed that 76% of respondents rely on consistent routines to stay on track with their goals. Everyday tasks such as meal preparation (45%), household cleaning (44%), and exercise all contribute to achieving personal objectives.

Financial Routines Drive Savings

Regarding finances, nine in 10 respondents said having a routine is vital for managing their budget effectively. Three-quarters of those with steady money management habits—such as regularly checking bank balances and setting aside money on pay day—have saved an average of £320 over the last 12 months as a result.

To assist with this, many people turn to practical tools, including budgeting and banking apps, while those keen to monitor their household spending more closely use devices such as smart meters.

Smart Meters Boost Energy Awareness

More than two-thirds (65%) of smart meter owners say the device has helped them monitor their energy consumption and associated costs. Furthermore, almost half (47%) say their smart meter has motivated them to adopt habits that reduce energy usage.

Sarah Fitzgerald, a mother of two from Essex, shared her experience. She said: "My routines are what help me stay in control of it all. I like to know what's coming in and going out each month, so having simple ways to stay on top of my budget is important to me."

She added that checking her smart meter display has become a regular part of her daily routine and has helped her entire family develop better habits. "My kids are more aware of the energy they use now, and those small changes can make a real difference to our bills," she explained.

Routines Bring Contentment and Momentum

The study revealed that routines have a powerful effect on achieving objectives. According to the survey, 70% of respondents find genuine contentment in the minor habits and customs that form their everyday existence.

Gladiators star, Olympian, and television personality Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, better known as Nitro, emphasized the importance of routine. He commented: "I've always believed that success comes from doing the simple things consistently. Life can get pretty hectic, so routines help me stay focused and moving in the right direction."

"It's the same with managing things like energy use at home – with a smart meter you can keep track of your usage and feel more in control of it. For me, it's another example of how small daily habits and having the right information can make life feel more manageable."
