A devastating gas explosion at a coal mine in China's northern Shanxi province has claimed at least eight lives and left 38 miners trapped underground, according to state media reports on Saturday.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred on Friday evening at the Liushenyu coal mine in Changzhi city. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that approximately 247 workers were underground at the time of the explosion. As of early Saturday, 201 miners had been safely brought to the surface, but rescue operations continue for the remaining 38.
Investigation and Response
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an all-out effort to rescue the missing miners and a thorough investigation to determine the accident's cause. He also emphasized the need to hold those responsible accountable, as reported by Xinhua.
Shanxi's Coal Mining Industry
Shanxi province is China's primary coal mining region, larger than Greece and home to around 34 million people. The province's hundreds of thousands of miners extracted 1.3 billion tons (1.17 billion metric tons) of coal last year, accounting for nearly one-third of China's total coal production. This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with coal mining in the region.
