In a significant advancement for the electric vehicle industry, researchers in China have unveiled a new component for lithium batteries that could dramatically enhance performance and range. Overcoming Cold-Weather Limitations
Traditional lithium-oxygen batteries have long struggled with efficiency in sub-zero temperatures, often leading to reduced charging capabilities and shorter driving ranges. The new development utilises a fluorinated hydrocarbon solvent, which replaces conventional models and substantially cuts the required electrolyte volume. This adjustment not only improves energy storage but also ensures reliable operation in harsh environments.
Enhanced Energy Density and Performance
The breakthrough battery achieves remarkable energy densities, exceeding 700 watt-hours per kilogram at room temperature and maintaining nearly 400 watt-hours per kilogram even at temperatures as low as -50°C.
