In a landmark decision for South Wales, a colossal £300 million leisure complex featuring a ski resort, tropical waterpark, and hotel has been granted planning permission. The ambitious Rhydycar West development in Merthyr Tydfil is set to transform the region's tourism and economy.
A "Game Changer" for the Valleys
Merthyr Tydfil council's Planning, Regulatory and Licensing committee unanimously approved the application on 7 January 2026, voting against a recommendation for refusal. The Welsh government had previously decided in November not to call in the application, leaving the final say with local authorities.
Councillor Brent Carter, Leader of the Council, hailed the project as groundbreaking. "Rhydycar West is without doubt a complete game changer for Merthyr Tydfil," he stated, emphasising how it would complement existing attractions like Bike Park Wales and Zip World. He highlighted the "overwhelming" public support and the project's potential to massively boost the local economy and create opportunities for future generations.
Inside the Mega-Resort Plans
The development, slated for land just south-west of the A470 roundabout, promises world-class facilities. The centrepiece will be the UK's largest indoor snow centre, featuring a 400-metre-long main slope – one of the longest in Europe – enabling year-round skiing and snowboarding.
The complex will also include:
- An indoor tropical waterpark complete with slides and an artificial beach.
- A 418-room hotel and 30 woodland lodges for accommodation.
- A dedicated conference centre.
- The future headquarters for Team GB's Winter Olympic and Paralympic teams.
Path to Opening and Economic Impact
Ali Tyebkhan, CEO of Rhydycar West, celebrated the planning milestone as the "culmination of many years of hard work," thanking the team, partners, and local community for their support. Reports indicate construction could begin next year, with a target opening date of 2030.
The project represents one of the most significant private investments in Welsh tourism in recent decades. It is strategically designed to establish Merthyr Tydfil as a major UK adventure and leisure destination, driving job creation and visitor spending throughout the South Wales Valleys.
