£300m Ski Resort and Waterpark Approved for South Wales, Opening 2030
£300m Welsh Ski Resort and Waterpark Gets Green Light

Plans for a colossal £300 million holiday complex in South Wales, featuring a major ski resort and an indoor tropical waterpark, have been officially approved by local councillors.

The ambitious scheme for Rhydycar West in Merthyr Tydfil was given the green light by the council's Planning, Regulatory and Licensing committee on 7 January 2026, despite an initial recommendation for refusal.

What the Mega-Project Will Include

The development is set to transform a site in south Wales into a premier year-round destination. Its centrepiece will be the UK's largest indoor snow centre, boasting one of the longest artificial ski slopes in Europe.

Alongside the ski facilities, the project will feature a large-scale indoor tropical waterpark, a substantial 418-room hotel, and a collection of 30 woodland lodges for visitors seeking a more secluded stay.

A "Game Changer" for the Local Economy

Merthyr Tydfil's council leader, Brent Carter, enthusiastically endorsed the decision. He described the Rhydycar West development as a "complete game changer" for the area.

The project is anticipated to provide a massive boost to the local economy by creating a significant number of jobs and attracting tourists from across the UK and beyond. In a further vote of confidence, the complex is also expected to become a training base for Team GB's Winter Olympic and Paralympic teams in the lead-up to future games.

Timeline for Construction and Opening

With planning permission now secured, construction work is forecast to begin next year. If the build stays on schedule, the vast resort is projected to open its doors to the public in 2030.

This development represents one of the most significant investments in Welsh tourism infrastructure in recent years, aiming to establish Merthyr Tydfil as a key hub for leisure and sport.
