Following an early morning flight from Sydney, we arrived before lunch and proceeded directly to the CBD to check into the Adelaide Marriott Hotel. This establishment is housed within the beautifully restored former General Post Office, offering views over Victoria Square. Shortly after settling in, we visited Selene Spa and Wellness on Currie Street, Adelaide's newest luxury wellness destination. After a morning of travel, the timing was impeccable. Feeling profoundly zen and rejuvenated after several hours of detoxifying treatments, we returned to the hotel to prepare for dinner at Omada Bar and Grill. This buzzing venue, which opened in December, specialises in elevated Greek cuisine. It features flame-cooked meats, fresh seafood, and vibrant Mediterranean dishes crafted for sharing. A long, leisurely dinner here served as the perfect introduction to Adelaide's thriving food scene and an ideal commencement to our city weekend.
Day Two: Markets, French Flair, and Fringe Magic
Adelaide's CBD is remarkably walkable and flat, allowing us to reach one of the city's most iconic food destinations within minutes: the Central Market. Housing over 70 traders under one roof, it stands as one of the largest undercover fresh food markets in the southern hemisphere, with stalls overflowing with vibrant produce, freshly baked bread, and artisan cheeses.
Lunch led us to Hey Jupiter, a charming French brasserie nestled on Ebenezer Place. The space evokes a little slice of Paris in Adelaide, with classic bistro dishes, excellent coffee, and a laid-back European atmosphere that encourages lingering. We opted for snails and duck foie gras, swapping a traditional espresso for an espresso martini—perfect fuel for the subsequent hours of op-shopping.
Then, we immersed ourselves in what makes Adelaide truly distinctive: its festival season. Each summer, the city is transformed during the Adelaide Fringe, the largest arts festival in the southern hemisphere. For 31 days and nights, more than 6,000 artists perform across 1,400 shows, occupying theatres, bars, gardens, and pop-up venues citywide.
Dinner that evening was at Tarantino's, a lively New York-Italian bar and grill on Vardon Avenue exuding serious old-school charm. The menu celebrates handmade pasta, wood-grilled mains, and house-aged salumi—dishes designed for sharing over fine wine. We then proceeded to the Spiegeltent at The Garden of Unearthly Delights for La Ronde, a dazzling circus-cabaret production from the creators of Blanc de Blanc. Day Three: Art, Cocktails, and World-Class Theatre
The next morning, we adopted a slower pace with breakfast before heading to North Terrace, Adelaide's cultural boulevard. Our destination was the Art Gallery of South Australia, one of the country's most impressive public collections. It houses over 45,000 works spanning Australian, European, Asian, and North American art, including one of the most significant Indigenous art collections nationally.
By early afternoon, we were back in Fringe mode with one of the trip's most unexpectedly enjoyable experiences: a cocktail-making class at Prohibition Liquor Co. Hosted by the team from Next Door Cocktail Bar, the class involved shaking, stirring, and garnishing two signature gin cocktails using the distillery's award-winning spirits.
Dinner that evening was at Osteria Oggi, widely regarded as one of Adelaide's finest Italian restaurants. The venue resembles a modern Italian piazza in the city's heart, complete with cobblestone floors, arches, intimate booths, and an open kitchen where chefs hand-roll fresh pasta. The beef carpaccio is unrivalled and highly recommended. From there, we walked to the Festival Theatre for a performance of the Korean play The Cherry Orchard as part of the Adelaide Festival, another internationally recognised arts event running concurrently with the Fringe.

Spending several days in Adelaide makes it easy to comprehend why the city consistently garners global praise. The urban layout feels refreshingly straightforward to navigate, featuring a walkable grid surrounded by parklands that impart a sense of calm seldom found in major capitals. While the famous wine regions of Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Adelaide Hills are within reach, each requires a dedicated excursion.
Our three-day visit merely scratched the surface, yet this mother-daughter journey provided a completely new perspective on a city that many Australians still underestimate. Adelaide is no longer the quiet cousin; it is a vibrant, liveable destination deserving of its top-tier status.
