Airline Passengers Warned: Bright Luggage Poses Security Risk

Planning and embarking on a holiday getaway ranks among life's greatest joys, yet unforeseen circumstances can sometimes disrupt even the best-laid travel plans. Flights may be cancelled, accommodation double-booked, or worse, travellers can become targets for criminal activity at airports and destinations.

Security Specialist Issues Crucial Luggage Warning

Whilst maintaining vigilance remains essential, there are proactive measures holidaymakers can implement before departure to ensure their belongings stay secure throughout their journey. Shahzad Ali, a prominent security specialist and CEO of Get Licensed, has revealed his top recommendations for protecting luggage while travelling.

Avoid Brightly Coloured Suitcases at All Costs

Ali strongly urges passengers to completely avoid using brightly coloured luggage, as vivid hues like red, blue, or green can attract unwanted attention from potential thieves. He specifically cautions travellers flying with major carriers this summer, including Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet, and TUI, advising them to opt for a black suitcase instead.

"Although a new and colourful suitcase may appear more fashionable, it won't only be attractive to you," Ali explained. "It's best to choose a more common-looking suitcase, and if possible, a worn-out one - as to not stand out from the crowd - and with it, a high-quality padlock."

He emphasised that this simple switch can significantly enhance item security. To prevent luggage mix-ups without drawing undue notice, passengers can add a subtle identifier like a ribbon or sticker to their bag.

Strategic Packing and Item Organisation

Ali provided another valuable security suggestion regarding packing methodology. He recommends organising belongings into three distinct categories:

  1. Extremely valuable items such as documents, credit cards, mobile phones, and larger cash sums
  2. Valuable items including jewellery and other expensive possessions
  3. Less valuable items like clothing and personal care products

For maximum protection, extremely valuable items that won't be frequently needed at the airport should be secured in a money belt worn close to the body throughout the journey. Items requiring airport access should be placed in a small handbag or fanny pack kept in front of the traveller at all times, then transferred to the money belt when no longer needed.

Larger valuables such as laptops or tablets can be safely stored in carry-on luggage, while jewellery should be strategically concealed among less valuable items like clothing within checked baggage.

By implementing these practical security measures and selecting discreet, common-looking luggage, summer travellers can significantly reduce their risk of becoming theft targets while ensuring their holiday remains focused on relaxation and enjoyment rather than worry over belongings.
