Chicago's Annual Orchid Show Transforms Winter with a Burst of Colour
A gentle blanket of white snow covers the Chicago Botanic Garden, with chilly air and gray skies setting a typical winter scene. Inside, however, the atmosphere shifts dramatically as warm air and bright lights illuminate more than 10,000 vividly coloured orchids, preparing for the garden's 12th annual Orchid Show, which opens this Saturday.
A Retro Theme and Whimsical Displays
This year's event embraces a "Feelin' Groovy" theme, inspired by the 1970s, with several nostalgic installations. Among them is a yellow Volkswagen Beetle filled with orchids, adding a playful touch to the exhibition. Jodi Zombolo, associate vice president of visitor events and programs, highlighted the show's appeal, stating, "It's just a really great way to get out of the winter cold and come into our greenhouses. I think people are really looking for something to kind of bring happiness and something that they will enjoy and find whimsy in."
Rare Species and Botanical Wonders
The orchid family is one of the largest in the plant world, and the show features some rare species, as noted by exhibits horticulturist Jason Toth. A standout example is the Angraecum sesquipedale, commonly known as Darwin's orchid, displayed in the west gallery. Toth explained that this orchid led Charles Darwin to correctly deduce that pollinators have evolved to access its long nectar spur, remarking, "It has a great story and it's quite remarkable-looking."
In the south greenhouse, visitors can admire massive, gnarly roots dangling from purple, pink, and yellow Vanda orchids. These epiphytic orchids grow on tree surfaces rather than in soil, showcasing the diversity of the species.
A Welcome Escape from Winter
With winter fatigue setting in, Toth emphasised the show's timing, saying, "I think everyone's tired of the winter. So having some kind of flower show at this point is what we're all craving. And orchids fits the bill." The event is expected to attract approximately 85,000 visitors this year, offering a vibrant and educational retreat from the cold.
The Chicago Botanic Garden's Orchid Show not only provides a colourful contrast to the snowy landscape but also celebrates botanical beauty and historical significance, making it a must-visit destination this season.
