Derbyshire Log Cabin Voted Europe's Most Romantic Resort for 2025
Derbyshire Log Cabin Named Europe's Most Romantic Resort 2025

Derbyshire Retreat Crowned Europe's Most Romantic Destination

When I announced to my boyfriend that we were embarking on a weekend escape to Europe's most romantic resort, his excitement was palpable. His initial guesses ranged from Paris and Rome to the South of France, with an optimistic mention of the Maldives. The reality, however, was far closer to home: a journey of just over two hours from London to the heart of the English countryside in Derbyshire.

A Surprise Escape to the Peak District

Swinney Wood Log Cabins, situated on the fringes of the Peak District, was recently honoured as Europe's Most Romantic Resort for 2025 at the World Travel Awards. While it may lack the glitz of London's Ritz or Parisian five-star hotels, it offers something profoundly romantic: unparalleled peace, complete privacy, and uninterrupted quality time for couples.

Living in London with demanding careers, finding moments alone without distractions has become increasingly rare for us. The prospect of an entire long weekend free from interruptions felt almost mythical amidst our hectic work schedules, social commitments, and travel plans.

The Rustic Luxury of Swinney Wood

Our destination was the Serein cabin, a two-storey rustic log cabin crafted from Western Red Cedar tree trunks, sleeping two adults with breathtaking views of the UNESCO World Heritage Derwent Valley. The cabin's name, meaning 'fine rain that falls at sunset,' set the tone for a serene escape.

Upon arrival, our meticulously planned itinerary was swiftly abandoned. The charm of Swinney Wood lies in its ability to slow time, stripping away the hustle of city life. Instead of a packed schedule, we embraced the tranquility.

Features Designed for Romance

The cabin boasted a private hot tub and sauna, where we enjoyed Prosecco and ice-cold beers from the built-in wine cooler while soaking in panoramic countryside views. Rain during our stay only enhanced the romantic ambiance, creating a scene straight from a film.

Inside, an open-plan kitchen and living area featured a log burner and a luxury bathroom with a spacious shower. Upstairs, a king-size four-poster bed and a freestanding tin bath added to the rustic charm. Thoughtful touches included dressing gowns, slippers, and Molton Brown toiletries for an at-home spa experience.

"Our aim has always been simple: to create a truly romantic, peaceful retreat where guests can step away from busy lives and reconnect—with nature and with each other," explained Rebecca, director of Swinney Wood.

Exploring the Local Area

While we spent most of the weekend relaxing—watching movies, chatting, and enjoying the hot tub—we eventually ventured out. Highlights included:

  • A coffee stop in Belper, winner of the 2019 Great British High Street awards, at Cocoa Cafe @ I Should Cocoa.
  • A walk along the Tissington Trail from Tissington to Ashbourne, followed by a pub lunch at Machine Inn featuring classic British dishes like soy and Guinness braised beef and fish and chips.
  • A visit to Kedleston Hall, a National Trust property built in the 1760s.

With only four cabins available, each individually crafted for privacy and comfort, it's no wonder Swinney Wood is in high demand. As we departed, the quiet fields fading behind us, I realized this Derbyshire hideaway had redefined romance for us—proving that sometimes, the most magical escapes are closer than you think.
