A first date at a local pub transformed into an impromptu holiday to Benidorm for a couple after a remarkable £5,000 lottery win. Paige Howlett, 31, and John Thompson, 36, from Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, embarked on what they thought would be a simple evening out in November, only to find themselves jetting off to Spain hours later.
The Unfolding of an Extraordinary Evening
Paige and John, set up by mutual friends, had booked a hotel for their first date to avoid travelling home after drinks. Paige packed a change of clothes and her passport for identification, little knowing how crucial that document would become. During their date, John mentioned he had entered a lottery draw that day, joking that if he won the £5,000 prize, they would go on holiday instead of continuing their pub crawl.
A Fateful Phone Call and a Fruit Machine Windfall
As the evening progressed, John's mother called him excitedly after spotting his bonus ball number on a Facebook post announcing the winner, confirming his £5,000 win. Not to be outdone, Paige then won £170 on a fruit machine at the pub, which she immediately declared would cover their taxi fare to Newcastle Airport.
In a tipsy state, the pair hailed a taxi and, en route to the airport, booked a £500 package holiday to Benidorm on Spain's Costa Blanca. They admitted to being so intoxicated they needed coffee to sober up before being allowed to board their flight, laughing uncontrollably throughout the journey.
Five Days in Benidorm: From Strangers to Soulmates
Arriving in Alicante airport with minimal luggage—Paige had only pyjamas and a spare outfit, while John had his passport—they spent five days in Benidorm. Despite the awkwardness of wearing unsuitable clothing (John in a tracksuit, Paige in a wool two-piece), they quickly purchased new items and enjoyed a relaxed holiday by the pool, playing bingo and visiting local bars.
Paige reflected on the experience, noting that the spontaneous trip forced them to trust each other deeply, despite having just met. She described it as a risk that paid off, bringing them closer together and allowing them to fall in love in a foreign environment. Upon returning to the UK, they made their relationship official, with John asking Paige to be his girlfriend.
Reflections and Future Plans
Both Paige and John acknowledged the craziness of their adventure, with Paige admitting she might not have done it sober. John called it the best holiday he had ever been on, filled with non-stop laughter. The couple has since booked another holiday to Benidorm for St Patrick's weekend in March, eager to recreate the magic of their first trip together.
Paige shared a video of their story online, which garnered over 200,000 views and comments praising them as "soulmates" and celebrating their fateful meeting. She emphasised that while such spontaneity might not be for everyone, it led to the most interesting date of her life and a blossoming romance she would not change for the world.
