Airbnb hosts operating a distinctive Monopoly-themed resort in British Columbia, Canada, have been left devastated after discovering that guests had broken into an arcade machine on the property. This incident occurred years after previous visitors destroyed a life-sized Monopoly board at the same location, adding to a series of frustrating vandalism episodes.
Discovery of the Damage
David Prescot, the owner of Maple Rock Resorts, and his employee, Julia, were inspecting the Monopoly House in Chilliwack, approximately two hours outside Vancouver, when they noticed the new damage. While reviewing a video shared on their Instagram account, Julia spotted issues with a punch machine in one of the arcade rooms.
The video footage begins with Julia calling Prescot from the arcade area, her tone immediately signalling distress. "Oh my God, I can tell by her voice something is wrong," Prescot can be heard saying as he approaches her. Julia then reveals the extent of the vandalism, showing how guests had taped the back of the machine and opened the change box, which was found completely empty.
Additional Property Damage
Prescot further disclosed to the Daily Mail that the same group of guests had broken a mirror within the seven-bedroom, five-bathroom resort and attempted to replace it covertly. The owners only became aware of this when Julia noticed she could no longer reach the mirror, prompting a review of security footage. The footage captured the guests carrying a new mirror into the property at around 4 a.m., highlighting the deliberate nature of the act.
History of Vandalism at the Resort
This recent incident follows a previous episode where guests caused significant damage to the resort's life-sized Monopoly board, one of its main attractions. Prescot recounted how, in 2024, a group of children visiting the property threw boulders onto the board and smashed it with golf clubs, tearing up the epoxy underneath. The situation worsened when rain froze beneath the board and gusty winds further dislodged the vinyl flooring.
Video posted to Maple Rock Resort's Instagram showed pieces of the vinyl torn up over a concrete slab, with Prescot exclaiming, "Oh my God," upon seeing the destruction. Julia reacted dejectedly, kicking the damaged board and describing it as a disaster. Despite her initial despair, she suggested, "Maybe we could fix it?" to which Prescot affirmed, "Well, guess what Julia? We are gonna fix it."
Repair Efforts and Precautions
Prescot and his team successfully restored the life-sized board through a laborious process that took weeks. A montage video documented workers sanding down the concrete, painting it turquoise, and reapplying all the spaces and the Monopoly logo. The repair required multiple coats of epoxy, with each coat needing a day to dry, underscoring the time and effort involved.
To prevent future incidents, Prescot has installed a sign explicitly warning guests against using rocks, sticks, golf clubs, or metal on the board. He continues to welcome visitors to the resort, which boasts extensive amenities including 33 beds, five bathrooms, seven showers, three kitchens, two living rooms, three bars, three patios, and two game rooms.
