How to Save on Visits to the UK's Most Beautiful Gardens This Spring

Families across the United Kingdom have the opportunity to explore some of the nation's most stunning gardens for free or at significantly reduced prices this spring season. The National Gardens Scheme provides access to more than 3,300 private gardens located throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Channel Islands, all while generating funds for nursing and health-related charities.

Historic Programme Supporting Charities

Established in 1927, this long-running programme enables visitors to tour gardens at stately homes or arrange visits to private residences. In the previous year, the National Gardens Scheme successfully raised over £3.8 million for various charitable organisations. These include Carers' Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Parkinson's UK, and The Queen's Nursing Institute, demonstrating its substantial impact on community health initiatives.

Substantial Savings on Garden Visits

Through the scheme's official website, families can achieve considerable financial savings. For instance, consumer champion Which? highlights that a trip to Blenheim Palace Gardens on 10 May is available for just £10 per adult ticket, a notable reduction from the standard price of £31. Children's tickets are similarly discounted to £7, down from £15, making it an affordable outing for all ages.

Additional Discounts Across the UK

Another excellent deal accessible via the scheme is at Rydal Mount and Gardens in Cumbria, the historic home of poet William Wordsworth. On specified open days, including 30 and 31 March, 1 April, and 1, 2, and 3 June, admission is priced at £6.50, representing a significant discount compared to the usual cost of £12.50. Scotland operates its own independent Gardens Scheme, which also raises money for charity through garden admissions, featuring 435 gardens to choose from, including remote islands and castle grounds.

Free Access to Hampton Court Palace Gardens

Separate from the National Gardens Scheme, Which? has identified savings at one of the country's most impressive historical sites. Hampton Court Palace's gardens, which span over 60 acres and reflect 500 years of history from the Tudor, Baroque, and Victorian periods, typically cost at least £29 to enter. However, on certain days this year, the palace gardens will be open free of charge with no tickets or pre-booking required. These dates include 14 and 15 March, 9 and 10 May, 12 and 13 September, 10 and 11 October, 21 and 22 November, and 26 December (for The Wilderness garden only). Please note that entrance to the Palace itself, the Maze, and the Magic Garden will still require a ticket.

This spring, take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy the UK's natural beauty while supporting vital health charities through discounted or free garden visits.
