A couple accustomed to extravagant five-star holidays costing £21,748 have made a surprising confession: they experienced "11 times more fun" on a budget getaway to Ayia Napa that cost just £223 per person. The revelation came during an episode of Channel 5's television programme Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday, which aired on Sunday, 15 March.
From Luxury to Budget: A Dramatic Shift
High-end jewellery consultant Lydia and her husband Rob, a music producer who once played bass in the noughties band Missing Andy, typically indulge in lavish vacations without hesitation. Hailing from Essex, the pair are used to splurging thousands on deluxe hotel suites and posh seafront dinners. However, for this experiment, they embraced a typical "Brits abroad" experience in Cyprus's party capital, Ayia Napa.
Their usual luxury was replaced with a day out on a pirate boat and enjoying what they described as "dirty €7 kebabs." The stark contrast was part of the show's format, which invites individuals from different wealth brackets to experience holidays outside their normal financial comfort zone.
A Tale of Two Holidays
The episode also featured best friends Vicky and Shelley from Birmingham, who first joined Lydia and Rob on a luxury trip to Paphos. The group stayed in flats costing £1,300, complete with a private pool and premium amenities so impressive they moved Shelley to tears.
Shelley, who had to give up her full-time recruitment job 18 months ago to care for her autistic 13-year-old son Alfie, and Vicky, a healthcare worker earning minimum wage, found the luxury experience eye-opening. Vicky described her daily life as a "struggle," working long hours to stay afloat, while Shelley often has as little as £50 of disposable income per week.
Despite the opulence of Paphos, which included cocktails by the pool and a cultural walking tour, all four participants unanimously agreed that the budget trip to Ayia Napa was superior. The entire Ayia Napa experience, covering accommodation, spending money, and activities, totaled just £892 for the group.
Embracing the Budget Experience
Initially skeptical, Lydia and Rob described their twin-bed room as "a little bit prison-y" and noted the toilets were "about as big as in a camper van." They were also daunted by having only £30 per person per day to spend. However, their perspective quickly changed after a night out clubbing down the strip, taking shots with strangers, enjoying karaoke, and being dragged by a boat on an inflatable sofa.
"The adventures we had on our holidays were amazing," Lydia enthused. "And I've made memories that I will take away with me, but then coming here and being reminded of when I was younger has been so much fun. It's made us realise that we don't need to spend silly money to enjoy ourselves."
Rob echoed her sentiments, stating, "It was about 11 times less than what we spent on the expensive one, but we had 11 times more fun on this one." He even found joy in a cheap kebab after clubbing, remarking, "I enjoyed it just as much as I would an a la carte dinner."
Questioning Luxury Value
While the couple appreciated the pampering in Paphos, Vicky was less impressed with the value for money in fine dining. At a restaurant where a bottle of champagne could cost £1,300, she was dismayed by a meal consisting of just four prawns with sauce, despite finding it "lovely." The final bill of £430 left her horrified.
"I would never ever pay that amount of money for food," Vicky declared, adding that she would prefer a burger and chips. Lydia admitted, "It does make you take a step back and go actually that is a heck of a lot of money."
Shelley summed up the experience, saying, "I loved the luxury holiday, it was amazing and fancy, I'm not knocking it, but I feel personally we have had a lot more fun on this holiday." She even claimed, "If I had all the money in the world I would still choose to go on the poor holiday."
The episode of Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday aired on Channel 5 on Sunday, 15 March at 8pm, showcasing how budget travel can sometimes outshine luxury in terms of pure enjoyment and memorable experiences.
