Nicola Croal spent a night at the award-winning Riverbed Luxury Lodges in Ballachulish, located in the Scottish Highlands near Glencoe. The compact cabins measure just 12 square metres but feature a double bed, en suite shower, kitchenette, and a private terrace with a hot tub overlooking a woodland stream.
Compact Yet Well-Equipped Cabins
Each pod is crafted in Scotland, designed as a 'mini castle in a cabin'. Built in 2015, they have won multiple accolades, including the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award in 2020. The interior includes a comfortable double bed with a large round window, fluffy robes, and homemade cookies. The kitchenette has a microwave, small fridge, and toaster; guests can also hire a BBQ for the fire pit.
Secluded Location and Amenities
The site offers a Kitchen Food Truck & Bar, Woodlands Wellness Centre, and Wilderness Sauna. According to Croal, the secluded location and the sound of the flowing burn were her favourite aspects. The hot tub, integrated into the decking, was at the perfect temperature on arrival.
Breakfast and Privacy
In the morning, a continental breakfast hamper is left outside the door, containing homemade granola, yoghurt, croissants, bread, pain au chocolat, and jams. The no-contact check-in and guest privacy were praised. Croal noted that despite pods being metres apart, it felt private.
Value for Money
The only minor complaint was the 10am checkout time, which is early given the 4pm check-in. However, Croal concluded: 'It was excellent value for money and can honestly say it was one of the best holiday accommodations I've ever experienced in Scotland.' She would return 'in a heartbeat.'
