Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong has issued a video apology following the severe turbulence on flight SQ321 from London to Bangkok, which resulted in one death and multiple injuries. The victim, 73-year-old British man Geoff Kitchen, died of a suspected heart attack. Seventy-one passengers were injured, with six in critical condition.
Goh expressed his 'deepest apologies' and condolences to Kitchen's family, calling the event a 'traumatic experience'. The airline, known for its strong safety record, is cooperating with investigations. Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has promised a thorough probe.
Passengers described scenes of chaos, with cabin debris and oxygen masks deployed. Footage showed a damaged interior. Kitchen, a long-serving member of the Thornbury Musical Theatre Group, was remembered as a man of 'utmost honesty and integrity'. UK authorities are supporting his family.
Of the 211 passengers and 18 crew, 143 uninjured individuals were flown to Singapore overnight. Airport authorities in Bangkok have concluded their emergency response, with 79 passengers and six crew still in the city, some receiving medical treatment.
