Spain's Reign as Top Expat Haven Ends Amid Rising Popularity of Portugal
For decades, Spain has been the go-to destination for British expats seeking a sun-drenched lifestyle, but new data reveals a significant shift in preferences. According to analysis from relocation experts, Spain's appeal is waning, with Portugal emerging as a formidable alternative for those dreaming of a life abroad.
Search Data Highlights a Dramatic Decline in Interest
The relocation company 1st Move International conducted an in-depth analysis of Google search data related to emigration. Their findings show a concerning trend for Spain: interest in relocating to the country has plummeted by 28%. This decline comes despite an overall 22% increase in emigration searches at the start of the year, often attributed to New Year resolutions and the bleak British winter weather.
In stark contrast, Portugal has experienced an impressive 18.9% year-on-year surge in searches from potential British expats. Already firmly positioned within the top ten destinations for UK nationals abroad, Portugal is now challenging Spain's long-held dominance in the expat market.
Understanding the Shift: Taxes, Tourism, and Simplicity
Experts point to several key factors driving this change. Spain has implemented new tax measures targeting foreign property buyers as part of its strategy to combat housing shortages and manage the impacts of mass tourism. While these policies aim to address local issues, they have inadvertently made moving to Spain more complex and less affordable for international buyers.
Mike Harvey, managing director at 1st Move International, explains: "Spain has long been a UK favourite for retirees and Brits looking for a warmer, calmer pace of life, and for now that remains true. However, mass tourism and the decision to impose taxes on foreign property buyers have affected affordability, making it more complex for retirees and long-term residents to move to Spain."
He adds: "While these measures aim to address housing shortages, they may also have unintended consequences for international buyers and those seeking a flexible lifestyle abroad. Spain's interest among Brits has begun to dip, and neighbour Portugal may take Spain's crown in the coming years."
Portugal's Allure: Climate, Culture, and Residency
Portugal offers a compelling package for expats. The country boasts mild winters, a welcoming culture, and an exceptional safety record. Perhaps most importantly, it provides a relatively straightforward path to residency, which is increasingly attractive compared to Spain's more bureaucratic and costly processes.
Celebrity endorsements have also boosted Portugal's profile, with figures like Madonna, Holly Willoughby, and Prince Harry choosing to spend time there. This glamorous association, combined with practical benefits, has helped fuel its rise in popularity.
Global Trends and Broader Context
Spain now ranks ninth among countries experiencing the steepest declines in emigration-related searches, with Rwanda and Iceland leading that unfortunate list. On the positive side, Portugal has seen a 4% year-on-year increase in searches, solidifying its position as a rising star in the expat world.
Globally, movers continue to be motivated by lifestyle factors and language familiarity. English-speaking countries with sunny climates dominate the overall trends. Canada remains the most desirable relocation destination worldwide, topping the list across 75 countries. For UK residents specifically, the United States is the most popular choice, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Australia. Within the US, New York City leads as the most searched city, with Los Angeles and Miami close behind.
As the expat landscape evolves, Portugal's combination of sunny weather, cultural warmth, and simpler residency requirements positions it as a strong contender to replace Spain as Europe's premier destination for British expats seeking a new life under the sun.
