Cucinetta, Sydney's Harbourfront Italian Gem, to Close After Two Decades
In a move that has left loyal diners across Sydney reeling, the acclaimed Italian restaurant Cucinetta has announced it will close its doors on March 29, marking the end of a beloved two-decade chapter. The surprise revelation was made via a cryptic video posted to Instagram, sending waves of emotion through the community that has cherished this harbourfront favourite in Woolwich.
An Emotional Farewell and a Hint of Renewal
Owner and head chef Vincenzo Mazzotta, who opened Cucinetta when he was just 23 years old, shared a heartfelt message reflecting on the restaurant's journey. 'I opened this place when I was 23, can you believe it?' he said in the video, standing inside the dining room that has witnessed countless milestones. 'I didn't know then that it would become part of so many lives.' Now 43, Mazzotta emphasised how the venue has evolved alongside him, hosting weddings, birthdays, and family gatherings while fostering hospitality careers.
However, before panic could fully set in among devoted customers, hints of a potential revival emerged. Director Cassandra Hili revealed to Daily Mail that the closure is part of an intentional reset. 'After more than 20 years in Woolwich, Vincenzo felt it was the right moment to evolve the restaurant and refresh the space and experience,' she explained. The temporary shutdown will allow for renovations aimed at repositioning Cucinetta for a new era, while staying true to its Italian foundations.
A Legacy of Rustic Cuisine and Harbour Views
Located in the picturesque suburb of Woolwich in Sydney's west, Cucinetta has built a sterling reputation for its rustic Italian dishes, stunning harbour views, and intimate celebrations. Over the years, it has become a go-to spot for:
- Wedding receptions and anniversary dinners
- Birthday parties and family lunches
- Romantic evenings and corporate events
Mazzotta paid tribute to the staff who grew with the restaurant, noting that many launched their hospitality careers there. 'They grew up here, they learned here, they built careers on foundations of Cucinetta, and that is something I'm deeply proud of,' he said. The dining room, as he described, has seen it all—from tears of joy to hard moments, with memories lingering long after plates were cleared.
Customer Outpouring and Future Speculation
The announcement triggered an outpouring of emotional responses from loyal patrons who have celebrated life's key moments at Cucinetta. One longtime diner wrote, 'Oh Vincenzo! Over the years, as a family, we have had so many December lunches, birthdays and celebrations as a family.' Another, who conducted wedding ceremonies at the venue, added, 'All the best Vincenzo. You were always extremely helpful and charming.' A third follower reminisced about being there from the very beginning, highlighting the restaurant's enduring community impact.
While details about the next chapter remain tightly under wraps, Hili confirmed that the closure is temporary, with renovations set to refresh the space and experience. 'The temporary closure will allow the team to undertake renovations and reposition Cucinetta for a new era while staying true to the Italian foundations that people have loved for two decades,' she stated. Customers bidding farewell will have to wait until April for more information on what this 'new era' will entail, leaving a mix of sadness and anticipation in the air.
