Thorpe Park has confirmed the permanent closure of its iconic Amity Beach water attraction, which has been a seasonal fixture for almost 35 years. The Surrey-based theme park will transform the outdoor water play area into a new relaxation zone called The Launchpad, designed to provide visitors with a space to rest and recharge between rides.
End of an Era for Amity Beach
Amity Beach first opened in 1991 and has been a beloved feature for families with younger children. The attraction included a sandy bay adjacent to shallow water, along with climbing frames, fountains, and miniature slides. It served as a popular spot for paddling and cooling off during warmer summer days, offering a respite from the park's more intense thrill rides.
Transition to The Launchpad
The Launchpad will replace the larger section of Amity Beach, featuring seating arrangements and canopies to create a comfortable environment. Unlike its predecessor, which was only operational in favourable weather, The Launchpad will remain open throughout the entire season, regardless of climatic conditions.
A spokesperson for Thorpe Park elaborated on the decision, stating, "We're really excited to be reimagining the large side of Amity Beach into a year-round multi-use event space, giving thrill seekers even more opportunities to come together, socialise and make memories between rides." They added, "We can't wait to share more about the seasonal events and experiences we've got planned as we get closer to launch."
Preservation of Water Facilities
While the main water area is being repurposed, Thorpe Park assures that water-based amenities will not be entirely eliminated. The smaller side of Amity Beach, complete with its sandy beach and splash pool, will continue to operate throughout 2026, mirroring its availability in the previous year.
Thorpe Park's Thrill-Seeking Legacy
Located just outside London, Thorpe Park is renowned for its record-breaking rides, including Hyperia, the UK's tallest and fastest rollercoaster, Swarm, the nation's first winged rollercoaster, and Colossus, the world's inaugural ten-loop rollercoaster. Additionally, the park features the 205ft-high Stealth rollercoaster, which propels passengers with the brake horsepower equivalent to two Formula 1 cars.
The park is scheduled to reopen for the 2026 season on 27 March, with The Launchpad set to enhance the visitor experience by providing a dedicated area for relaxation and social interaction amidst the adrenaline-fueled attractions.
