British Tourist in Critical Condition Following Devastating Scooter Crash in Thailand
A young British holidaymaker is fighting for his life in a Thai hospital after a severe scooter accident, with his family now grappling with enormous medical expenses due to a lack of travel insurance.

Zak Forsyth, a 21-year-old from Huyton in Merseyside, was involved in a catastrophic collision while riding a scooter in Thailand. The incident occurred as he was returning sober from an outing during a week-long holiday with friends. Although the driver of the car he crashed into promptly took him to a local hospital, Mr. Forsyth sustained potentially life-altering injuries.
His injuries include a brain bleed, a broken nose, a fractured jaw, and breaks to his ankle and arm. He is currently in a coma in the southeast Asian nation and has already undergone emergency surgery. This tragic event unfolded just days before he was scheduled to return home to the United Kingdom.
Family's Financial Struggle and Community Support
Without any medical or travel insurance for his trip, Mr. Forsyth's distraught family is facing the daunting reality of covering all treatment costs independently. His girlfriend, Amy Elkin, also 21 and from Prescot in Merseyside, described how the local community has rallied to support them.
'He's loved by everyone here,' she told the Liverpool Echo, holding back tears. 'I've had people coming round, dropping money off every five minutes. What we have is great but it's not enough to fix everything.' She emphasized that the entire Liverpool area has united to assist Mr. Forsyth's loved ones in meeting these urgent financial demands.
Fundraising Efforts and Urgent Travel Plans
Ms. Elkin has established an online fundraiser which has so far raised £12,000 towards a £20,000 target. This has enabled the family to place a £5,000 deposit for his necessary surgery. In a race against time, she has also secured an emergency passport and plans to travel to Thailand on Monday to be by his bedside.
'We're doing what we can. I just want him home,' she admitted. Mr. Forsyth's mother, Melanie McCourt, 47, echoed this sentiment, stating, 'We need as much help as we can to get him home.'
Emotional Appeals and Ongoing Challenges
In a heartfelt post on her Instagram account, Ms. Elkin expressed the sudden and devastating impact of the accident. 'This has been sudden and devastating, and like so many people, we never imagined something like this could happen to us. Our lives have been turned upside down in ways we never could have prepared for,' she wrote.
She highlighted the critical nature of time in ensuring Mr. Forsyth continues to receive essential care and in facilitating travel for his family to be with him. 'It is incredibly humbling and difficult to have to ask others for financial help, something we never thought we would need to do. But right now, our only focus is doing everything possible to support him and give him the best chance to keep fighting.'
All funds raised are directed towards Zak's medical expenses and urgent travel costs for his family. 'Any donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference and help give him the support and care he needs,' Ms. Elkin concluded, underscoring the ongoing need for community assistance in this dire situation.
