Exploring a Bakery Crowned Among the UK's Finest
The Great British Food Awards recently unveiled its list of the six finest bakeries across the United Kingdom, with The Pollen Bakery in Manchester securing a coveted spot. This recognition is not the first for the establishment, as it has also been featured in the Financial Times' top 20 UK bakeries, highlighting its consistent excellence in the culinary scene.
A Bustling Visit to Manchester's Ancoats Location
I decided to visit The Pollen Bakery to uncover what sets it apart from other bakeries, and my experience did not disappoint. The bakery operates two sites in Manchester: one in the Ancoats district and another in the Kampus area. I chose the Ancoats location, which offers picturesque views alongside a canal. Despite it being a Thursday morning, the external seating area was completely packed, forcing me to venture indoors.
Inside, I joined a queue of customers, a common sight given the bakery's renowned popularity. However, the service was impressively efficient, and I quickly placed my order and found a seat. The brunch menu, while not extensive, caters to diverse preferences with meat, vegetarian, and vegan options available.
Sampling the Hash Brown Bun and Reflecting on Value
I opted for the hash brown bun, which featured Pollen's house-made confit potato hash brown, roasted tomatoes, caramelised onion, watercress, and smoked onion mayonnaise, all nestled in a vegan brioche bun. Accompanied by a vanilla latte, the total bill came to £16.60. While the latte was perfectly adequate and the bun pleasant, I found it to be reasonably enjoyable but not particularly remarkable, especially given the price point.
As I was leaving, I noticed another customer had ordered the bun with a fried egg on top, which seemed like a missed opportunity on my part and something I plan to try on a future visit.
The Standout Moment: The Croissant Butter Blondie
It was only when I returned to purchase a dessert that I truly grasped why Pollen Bakery has earned its place among the nation's top bakeries. Rejoining the queue, which moved swiftly once again, I selected the croissant butter blondie, priced at £4.75. This item has been highlighted by the Great British Food Awards as one of the bakery's signature offerings.
Upon taking my first bite, it became abundantly clear why this pastry receives such acclaim. The croissant butter blondie was arguably the finest blondie I have ever tasted—genuinely outstanding and memorable. I will undoubtedly make a return trip specifically for this treat.
Why Pollen Bakery Deserves Its Acclaim
The bakery has undoubtedly earned the praise it garners, attracting a diverse clientele that includes those enjoying leisurely brunches as well as individuals popping in during lunch hours to grab loaves, sandwiches, or pastries to take away. Its popularity, efficient service, and standout offerings like the croissant butter blondie justify its position as one of the UK's best bakeries, making it a must-visit destination in Manchester.
