Yorkshire Reigns Supreme at National Fish & Chip Awards 2026

The prestigious National Fish & Chip Awards 2026 have officially unveiled the United Kingdom's premier destinations for this beloved culinary classic. In a remarkable display of regional dominance, Yorkshire establishments claimed four out of the six commended spots, solidifying the area's reputation as the undisputed heartland of British fish and chips.

The 'Oscars' of the Seafood Industry

Often dubbed the 'Oscars' of the seafood sector, these awards celebrate excellence across the industry. The 2026 ceremony honoured champions in both the Restaurant of the Year and Takeaway of the Year categories, recognising establishments that excelled amidst fierce competition from over 10,500 eligible chippy operators nationwide.

To be shortlisted, candidates had to demonstrate comprehensive product knowledge, implement sustainable business practices, uphold employer integrity, provide first-rate customer service, and, crucially, master the art of preparing exceptional fish and chips.

Takeaway of the Year: The Scrap Box in York

Securing the coveted title of Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year was The Scrap Box in York. Founded with the ambition to serve villages between York and Pocklington, as well as visitors en route to coastal campsites, this business has quickly risen to prominence.

Co-owners and brothers Aman and Gavin Dhesi expressed their elation at the achievement. Gavin Dhesi remarked, "This is the award every chippy dreams of—the 'Oscars' of our industry. With rigorous judging and a legacy of high-calibre past winners, it's a true honour to be recognised at this level." He added that representing the best of fish and chips for the coming year is both humbling and deeply meaningful to their team, reflecting the craft, care, and consistency invested in every portion.

Restaurant of the Year: Trenchers of Whitby

The title of Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year for 2026 was awarded to Trenchers of Whitby in Yorkshire. Established in 1980, this veteran eatery has perfected its seafood offerings over decades. The restaurant employs traditional beef dripping for frying, ensuring a superior product for its patrons.

Their diverse menu features seafood salads, crab, lobster, fresh fish, homemade pies and lasagnes, Whitby scampi, vegetarian options, and a dedicated children's menu, catering to a wide array of tastes.

Runners-Up and Regional Highlights

The awards also highlighted exceptional runners-up, with Yorkshire's presence remaining strong. In the takeaway category, second place went to The Fish Works in Largs, Scotland, while third place was claimed by Shaws Fish & Chips in Dodworth, Barnsley, Yorkshire.

For the restaurant category, second place was awarded to the highly-regarded Noah's in Bristol, and third place went to Whitby's Restaurant & Take Away in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

Industry Recognition and Future Outlook

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers and a judge on this year's panel, praised the competitors. "It's been clear from the start that those competing came with serious agendas to elevate industry best practice like never before, and we are so proud to say these are the winners!" he stated.

Crook emphasised the enduring significance of fish and chip businesses, noting, "Fish and chip businesses are the backbone of the takeaway space; the heritage is like no other, and our winners represent tradition and the future to the highest degree."

This year's results not only celebrate individual excellence but also underscore Yorkshire's pivotal role in preserving and advancing the cherished tradition of British fish and chips, setting a high standard for the industry nationwide.
