Delta Air Lines Halts VIP Services for Congress Amid Government Shutdown
Delta Air Lines has announced the suspension of special services for members of Congress, pointing to the severe impact of a partial government shutdown that has disrupted U.S. air travel. The Atlanta-based airline stated that this temporary measure is necessary due to resource constraints caused by the prolonged shutdown.
Special Treatment Axed for Lawmakers
Typically, Delta and other U.S. airlines provide VIP services for lawmakers who frequently travel between Washington and their home districts, given their oversight of the nation's air travel system. However, Delta confirmed that members of Congress will no longer receive airport escorts, seat upgrades, or priority rebooking. A dedicated phone line for reservations will remain available to them.
In a statement, Delta emphasised that its top priorities are safety and caring for its employees and customers, both of which have become increasingly challenging during the shutdown. The airline highlighted the strain on resources as a key factor in this decision.
TSA Workers Endure Unpaid Hardships
The shutdown has led to significant issues for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees, who have been without pay since mid-February. This has resulted in rising resignations and absentee rates, causing hours-long waits at security checkpoints for travelers. The funding lapse for the Department of Homeland Security stems from a congressional dispute over immigration enforcement.
In response, President Donald Trump has deployed immigration agents to over a dozen airports to assist with crowd control, a move criticised by TSA workers who argue these agents lack proper training for the role.
Delta CEO Condemns Political Inaction
Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed strong disapproval of the situation in a recent CNBC interview, calling the treatment of TSA workers "inexcusable." He noted that this is not the first time TSA officers have missed paychecks, having faced similar issues last fall. Bastian stated, "It's ridiculous to see them being used as political chits. We're outraged," and urged for immediate payment to the workers.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has also reported that the shutdown and resulting long TSA lines have delayed its response to a recent plane crash at LaGuardia Airport, underscoring the broader operational challenges in aviation.
