Iran has officially confirmed its men's national soccer team will take part in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, with a government spokesperson stating the team is preparing for a 'proud and successful participation.' This announcement comes amid ongoing conflict following military attacks launched by the US and Israel on 28 February, which had raised concerns about the team's ability to travel.
FIFA's Stance and Meeting with Iranian Officials
FIFA has consistently upheld the original World Cup schedule decided in December, rejecting proposals to relocate Iran's matches to Mexico. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently met with Iranian soccer leaders and players in Turkey to discuss the team's involvement in the tournament. The meeting aimed to address logistical challenges and ensure Iran's participation.
Visa Hurdles Remain
A significant obstacle remains the issuance of entry visas by the US government for the Iranian delegation. This includes soccer federation president Mehdi Taj, who was previously denied entry to a World Cup draw event. The Iranian government is working to resolve these visa issues to ensure the delegation's travel to the US for the tournament.
The confirmation of Iran's participation underscores the country's determination to compete on the global stage despite political tensions. The 2026 World Cup is set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Iran's matches scheduled in the US.
