Prime Minister Keir Starmer Celebrates Strengthening UK-Ireland Partnership Through Major Investment

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared that over £900 million in new Irish investment into the United Kingdom represents the "flourishing" relationship between the two nations. The announcement came as Sir Keir attended the second UK-Ireland Summit in Cork, where he was welcomed by Irish Premier Micheal Martin.

Substantial Investment Across Multiple Sectors

The £937 million in fresh capital from Irish companies is projected to generate approximately 850 new employment opportunities across several UK regions including London, Doncaster, South Wales and Scotland. This significant financial injection spans diverse industries from energy to technology and student accommodation.

Notable investments include:

  • Gas Networks Ireland committing £170 million
  • Amach, an AI and cloud-computing specialist for aviation, investing £45 million to create 150 positions
  • Focus Capital Partners allocating £3 million

  • O'Flynn Group developing £35 million worth of student accommodation in Manchester

Energy Cooperation and Security Enhancements

With energy costs expected to feature prominently in summit discussions, both governments emphasized strengthening energy connections. A major interconnector between Wales and Ireland is anticipated to supply power for approximately 570,000 households, representing at least £740 million in private investment.

Additionally, a separate energy connector linking Northern Ireland and Ireland aims to reduce electricity expenses across the island. The summit also addressed security concerns, with plans for joint exercises to test the resilience of subsea fibre optic cables between the nations and a renewed commitment to combat shadow fleets and other maritime threats through an updated UK-Ireland Defence Memorandum of Understanding.

Business Leaders Express Confidence in UK Market

Robert Adams, President of Focus Capital Partners, described the UK as "a highly attractive market for investment," noting that expanding their London presence enables closer collaboration with ambitious British companies while supporting Irish and international businesses seeking UK opportunities.

Kieran Linehan, Managing Director of Ayrton Group, explained their strategic focus on UK expansion, citing the market's larger size, diversity, and cultural compatibility. "Doing business in the UK for Irish companies is much easier than other markets," Linehan stated, highlighting historical relationships, geographical proximity, shared language and cultural synergies.

Michael O'Flynn, Chairman and CEO of O'Flynn Group, emphasized their long-term commitment to the UK student accommodation sector, describing it as "one of the most important and dynamic student accommodation markets globally."

Government Commitment to Deepening Partnerships

Prime Minister Starmer underscored the timing of this investment, stating: "As people on both sides of the Irish Sea are feeling the cost-of-living squeeze, we are investing in partnerships that make us better off and more secure."

He further elaborated: "The UK's close friendship with Ireland is going from strength to strength and I am pleased that we are going further in working together on growth, energy, security and more. This new Irish investment coming into the UK is one part of a much bigger picture of our flourishing cultural, commercial and security ties."

The Prime Minister concluded that government efforts to reset relationships with closest allies were yielding tangible benefits, helping the nation withstand global challenges while protecting family finances throughout the country.
