A1M Motorway Closed in Both Directions After Serious HGV and Pedestrian Collision
Emergency services are currently at the scene of a severe accident on the A1M in West Yorkshire, which has resulted in the complete closure of the motorway in both directions. The incident, involving a heavy goods vehicle and a pedestrian, occurred at approximately 8:30 AM this morning near Darrington, close to Wakefield.
Traffic Chaos and Significant Delays Reported
National Highways has confirmed that the A1M is shut between Junction 39 at Barnsdale Bar and Junction 41 at Holmfields Interchange due to what they describe as a "serious collision." All emergency services, including police, are on site, with National Highways Traffic Officers assisting in traffic management. Significant delays of around 30 minutes are being reported, with queues stretching up to two miles in the vicinity. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area to prevent further congestion.
Diversions in Place for Affected Travelers
For those traveling northbound, a detailed diversion route has been established. Drivers should exit the A1 at J39, follow the A639 for approximately six miles, then turn onto the A645 for two miles before merging onto the A162 southbound. This route leads to the M62 Junction 33, where travelers can rejoin the motorway network. Authorities emphasize that these measures are crucial to manage the ongoing traffic disruption safely.
Ongoing Updates and Public Safety Warnings
West Yorkshire Police have issued a statement urging the public to steer clear of the affected stretch of the A1M while they handle the incident. Inrix traffic reports indicate queuing traffic from Ferrybridge to Darrington, highlighting the widespread impact of the closure. Trapped vehicles have been released, but congestion remains heavy. Further updates are expected as emergency services continue their response to this tragic event.
