Double-Decker Bus and Car Collision Near Cheltenham Results in Hospitalisations
Two people have been transported to hospital for medical assessment following a serious road traffic incident involving a Stagecoach double-decker bus and a car. The collision occurred on the A46 Shurdington Road, near Cheltenham, prompting a major emergency response.
Emergency Services Swiftly Attend the Scene
Gloucestershire Police confirmed that emergency services, including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, were called to the scene at approximately 1pm on Monday. The incident was reported near the Church Lane junction, where the bus and car were involved in the crash.
According to authorities, one person from each vehicle was taken to hospital for further evaluation. The Stagecoach bus reportedly veered off the roadway during the collision, ploughing into hedges and striking a lamp post, which necessitated additional safety measures.
Road Closures and Power Disruptions Affect Local Area
The A46 Shurdington Road was closed for several hours following the incident, with closures remaining in place until around 8pm that evening. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while recovery operations and investigations were conducted.
National Grid personnel were dispatched to the scene to switch off power supplies as a safety precaution while the damaged bus was recovered and the compromised lamp post was secured. A spokesperson for National Grid indicated that approximately 49 properties in the Shurdington area were impacted by the temporary power shutdown.
Stagecoach and Police Issue Statements on the Incident
Stagecoach West released a statement acknowledging the incident, emphasising that the safety of passengers, drivers, and other road users is their absolute priority. The company confirmed that a recovery vehicle was en route and that a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is underway.
Gloucestershire Police provided further details, noting that properties within an approximate 100-metre radius of the scene experienced temporary effects due to the power shutdown. The force reiterated advice for the public to avoid the area while road closures persisted and recovery efforts continued.
