A car was destroyed by fire on the M8 near Shotts on Monday afternoon, prompting a response from three fire crews. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 2:34 pm to a vehicle fire on the westbound carriageway between junctions 5 and 6, just hours before the evening rush hour.
Fire Crews Quickly Contain Blaze
Firefighters arrived at the scene and worked to extinguish the flames, which had engulfed the car. The fire was brought under control, and crews left the scene at 3:30 pm after ensuring the area was safe. It is not known if anyone was injured during the incident.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.34pm on Monday, July 6, to reports of a car on fire on the M8 between junction 5 Shotts and junction 6 Newhouse on the westbound carriageway. Operations Control mobilised three appliances and crews worked to extinguish the fire. Firefighters left the scene at 3.30pm after ensuring the area was safe.”
Video Shows Flames and Smoke
Video of the fire shared on social media shows black smoke billowing above the carriageway as vehicles approach in both directions. In the footage, taken from the opposite carriageway, a white car can be seen with orange flames erupting from the sides and under the bonnet. Vehicles in the westbound carriageway pass within inches of the inferno as several motorists continue driving.
