DVLA Calls on Over-70s to Renew Driving Licences for Free in Simple Online Update
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has issued a fresh reminder to motorists aged 70 and above, urging them to renew their driving licences through a free and straightforward online service. This task, described as "quick" and "easy" by the agency, is essential for maintaining legal driving privileges.
Renewal Requirements for Older Drivers
Drivers who are 70 years old or older must renew their licences every three years, a more frequent requirement compared to the ten-year renewal period for younger individuals. The DVLA emphasised that the process is designed to be hassle-free and should not take long to complete.
In a social media post on platform X, the DVLA stated: "Are you 70 or over and due to renew your driving licence? Do it for free! Grab a cuppa and renew today at the official government website. It’s easy, quick and secure on GOV.UK."
How to Renew Your Licence Online
You can renew your driving licence online with the DVLA at no cost if you are 70 or over, or if you will reach 70 within the next 90 days. Applying online typically results in your new licence arriving within one week.
This service is available for renewing a British driving licence provided you meet specific criteria:
- Your British licence has expired or will expire within 90 days.
- You are a resident of Great Britain (note that Northern Ireland has a different service).
- You meet the minimum eyesight requirement.
- You are not prevented from driving for any reason.
Additionally, you can update your licence photo during the renewal process. However, this online service cannot be used to renew a C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlement; such renewals must be done by post.
Registration and Application Details
If you are using the online service for the first time, you will need to register with the following information:
- An email address.
- Addresses of where you have lived for the past three years.
- Your National Insurance number (if known).
- A valid UK passport number (if you wish to change the licence photo).
Once your application is submitted, the DVLA will send a confirmation email. You may be invited to participate in research via email, but you have the option to opt out.
Continuing to Drive During Renewal
You are permitted to continue driving while your licence is being renewed, as long as you satisfy all of the following conditions:
- You have your doctor's support to continue driving.
- You held a valid licence previously.
- You only drive under the conditions of your previous licence.
- Your application is less than a year old.
- Your last licence was not revoked or refused for medical reasons.
- You are not currently disqualified from driving.
- You were not disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after 1 June 2013.
Postal Renewal Option
For those who prefer or need to renew by post, you can use the D46P application form. The DVLA automatically sends this form 90 days before your 70th birthday. If you do not receive the D46P form, you can obtain a D1 application for a driving licence form from most Post Offices.
When renewing by post, your new driving licence should arrive within three weeks. Delays may occur if your medical or personal details require additional verification.
