Simon Calder Forecasts Easter Travel Chaos with Millions on the Move
Easter remains one of the most popular periods for travel in the United Kingdom, with millions of Britons anticipated to embark on journeys over the coming days. Whether staying domestically or venturing abroad for warmer climates, a significant surge in movement is expected across the nation.
Despite ongoing conflicts in the Middle East driving up petrol, diesel, and flight prices, many individuals are still preparing to hit the roads or airports. However, renowned travel expert Simon Calder has issued a stark warning, predicting substantial disruption that could affect countless travellers.
Road Traffic Set to Peak on Thursday and Friday
Calder emphasised that heavy traffic is likely on major roadways, particularly on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. He advised that the busiest periods will occur during daytime hours from approximately 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
The travel specialist suggested that the best strategy to avoid queues and crowds is to either depart early or leave late. He highlighted specific trouble spots, including the M25 heading south from the M1 towards Heathrow Airport, as well as the M5 travelling south from the M4 near Bristol.
Looking ahead to Easter Monday, Calder noted that traffic on the M5 will reverse direction, flowing northward from Taunton to Bristol, potentially causing significant delays. The M25 is also expected to remain congested and lively throughout the holiday period.
Rail Network Faces Extensive Closures and Replacements
Calder also cautioned that the rail network will be under considerable pressure due to numerous engineering works and track maintenance projects. A major closure will affect the entire 50-mile stretch between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central.
This shutdown will impact intercity services to the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales, and Southern Scotland. Passengers will need to begin their journeys at Milton Keynes Central, with bus replacement services operating from Bedford, accessible via St Pancras Station and Thameslink connections from various London stations.
Additional rail issues are expected in Yorkshire, where lines from Leeds via Garsforth to York and through Huddersfield will be closed, leading to diversions, delays, and further rail replacement buses. Closures are also scheduled from Cambridge to King's Lynn and from Winchester to Southampton.
Ferry Travel Advice for Dover Crossings
For those travelling to Dover to catch ferries, Calder relayed advice from Port of Dover chief Doug Bannister. Bannister recommended that passengers should not arrive more than two hours before their scheduled sailing time, assuring that the port will endeavour to facilitate smooth transitions.
He added that if travellers happen to miss their ferry, they will be rebooked without fuss or additional charges on the next available sailing. This guidance aims to streamline operations and reduce congestion at the port during the busy Easter period.
