EasyJet Passenger Ordered to Remove Jacket in Hand Luggage Dispute at Gatwick
A UK holidaymaker has claimed she was told to take off her jacket at an airport boarding gate following a heated dispute over hand luggage regulations. The incident occurred earlier this month at London Gatwick Airport, where the traveller was preparing to board an easyJet flight to Düsseldorf, Germany, for a five-day holiday.
Baggage Sizing and Duty-Free Controversy
In a bid to save money, the woman had only paid for an under-the-seat cabin bag due to her short stay. She explained in a TikTok video, which has since garnered over 2.1 million views, that she wore a jacket and scarf to the airport because of the chilly UK weather. After passing through security, she removed the scarf and draped it over her arm while waiting in the boarding queue.
Upon reaching the front, she was asked to demonstrate that her bag fit the easyJet dimension gauge. Although it initially fitted, a staff member allegedly pointed out that the bag was not zipped up. After zipping it and re-measuring, it still fit, but then the dispute escalated.
The traveller claimed she was informed that her duty-free purchases, consisting of two miniatures from Boots and a bottle of water, had to fit inside her hand luggage. She engaged in a "little bicker" with the staff member over this rule before being sent away to repack her bag.
Jacket Removal Demand and Boarding Ordeal
To create space, the woman put her jumper and coat back on and packed the scarf along with the duty-free items into her hand luggage. When she rejoined the queue, she alleged that the same easyJet staff member "immediately locked eyes" with her and pulled her aside to re-measure the bag.
After some difficulty due to a hairbrush, the bag fit again, but the staff member allegedly walked away, leaving her uncertain if she could board. As the gate was about to close, she asked for clarification and was told by another staff member that her bag was acceptable.
However, the original staff member then allegedly demanded, "Take your jacket off." When the traveller questioned this, the staff member insisted, "Unzip your jacket, now!" The holidaymaker complied, explaining she had just put her jumper on to free up bag space.
Finally, as she boarded, the staff member allegedly asked for her seat number and instructed her to place the bag under the seat in front, not in the overhead carrier. The traveller later described the experience as "mental" to fellow passengers.
EasyJet's Response and Apology
In a statement to the Mirror, easyJet expressed regret over the incident, stating, "We are sorry for her experience and so have been in touch to apologise and offer a gesture of goodwill." The airline has not commented further on the specific allegations regarding the jacket removal or duty-free rules.
This case highlights ongoing tensions between airlines and passengers over hand luggage policies, particularly as travellers seek to minimise costs on short trips. It also raises questions about staff conduct and consistency in enforcing regulations at boarding gates.
