A devastating five-car pile-up on the Monash Freeway in Dandenong North, southeast Melbourne, has resulted in the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy, with several other individuals sustaining injuries in the incident.
Details of the Collision
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after 2pm on Sunday following reports of a multi-vehicle collision. The crash involved five cars: a Mazda 3, a blue Mitsubishi, a BMW, a Volkswagen Tiguan, and a white Mitsubishi.
Injuries and Fatalities
The young boy, who was travelling in the Mazda 3, was rushed to hospital with critical injuries and sadly passed away on Tuesday. Victoria Police confirmed his death in an official statement released on Wednesday.
In the same vehicle, a 46-year-old woman remains hospitalised with critical injuries, while an eight-year-old girl sustained minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment.
Other Occupants Affected
Occupants of the blue Mitsubishi included a 68-year-old woman from Campbellfield, a 39-year-old woman from Glenroy, and a 6-year-old girl. All three were transported to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Fortunately, the occupants of the BMW, Volkswagen Tiguan, and white Mitsubishi escaped without any injuries.
Investigation and Arrest
The driver of the Volkswagen Tiguan, identified as a 34-year-old man from Berwick, was arrested at the scene. He has since been released pending further enquiries as the investigation continues.
