Glasgow Central Station Fully Reopens After Major Fire Disruption
All train services at Glasgow Central have resumed following a devastating fire that ravaged a nearby building earlier this month, marking one of the most significant events in the station's long history. The complete reopening of all platforms on Wednesday represents a major milestone after weeks of disruption and intensive recovery efforts.
Tremendous Recovery Effort
Network Rail Scotland has confirmed that all platforms are now fully operational, including those serving ScotRail, Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry and Caledonian Sleeper services. This comes after what officials described as a "tremendous" collaborative effort involving multiple agencies working around the clock to restore normal operations.
Innis Keith, Network Rail Scotland's health, safety and environment director, expressed both relief and pride at the station's recovery. "When we saw the pictures of the devastating fire, the turnaround from that devastation to being able to open the station within two and a half weeks is tremendous," he stated. "It has involved so many people across the rail industry and colleagues at Glasgow City Council all working together to get the station open and functioning again."
Phased Reopening Process
The fire originated in a vape shop on Union Street on Sunday, March 8, spreading through the building and around the corner. The blaze left only the facade of the B-listed Victorian building at the junction with Gordon Street standing. The main part of Glasgow Central station remained closed for over a week while demolition work continued on the fire-damaged structure.
Platforms seven to fifteen were successfully brought back into service on Wednesday, March 18, followed by the reopening of platforms one to six on Wednesday, March 25. Network Rail Scotland explained that substantial progress on demolition work allowed for the reduction of the exclusion zone, enabling this phased restoration of services.
Current Station Status
While the majority of the station has returned to normal operations, a small exclusion zone remains in place on the high-level concourse as work continues on the fire-damaged building. The entrances on Gordon Street and Union Street remain temporarily closed as part of this ongoing safety measure.
Passengers can currently access the station through the upper Hope Street entrance, the Hope Street driveway, and the low-level entrances, with staff available to provide guidance. The low-level station, situated below the main concourse, had previously reopened for train services from Wednesday, March 11.
Rail Services Return to Normal
ScotRail has confirmed it is resuming its normal timetable from Glasgow Central high level, with David Ross, ScotRail chief operating officer, expressing delight at the restoration of full services. "It's great news for our customers," he said. "We're really delighted that we're able to restore a full normal timetable here at high level in Glasgow Central."
Ross acknowledged that while most of the station is now operational, some differences remain. "We've got a couple of exits and entrances that are not available to us, but the majority of the station is open, and we've got our timetable and our services back to business as usual," he explained.
The reopening follows detailed inspections, operational checks, repairs and extensive cleaning throughout the affected areas. ScotRail has advised passengers that there may be some minor alterations to services as some trains may be out of position following the extended station closure, recommending that travelers check their journey details before departure.
Keith reflected on the significance of the incident, noting that "it's got to be one of the most significant events that the station has gone through" in its history. The successful restoration of full services within two and a half weeks of the devastating fire represents a remarkable achievement for all involved in the recovery operation.
