Train passengers in Glasgow are experiencing severe disruption following a significant fire that broke out near Glasgow Central railway station on Sunday evening. The incident has resulted in dozens of train cancellations and the partial closure of the station, with National Rail announcing that high-level platforms will remain shut until further notice.

The fire erupted at a four-storey commercial building on Union Street, prompting a large-scale emergency response. According to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, more than 60 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze, which was reported at 3.46pm on March 8, 2026. At its peak, 12 fire appliances and three high-reach vehicles were mobilised to the scene.
A spokesperson for the service stated: "We are currently working to extinguish the fire, and there are no reported casualties at this time. Crews remain on site to ensure the situation is fully under control." The fire originated on the ground floor of the building, and efforts to contain it continued for over four hours after it began.

As a direct consequence of the fire, National Rail has implemented major changes to train operations. All services to and from the high-level platforms at Glasgow Central, Scotland's busiest station, have been suspended indefinitely. Additionally, trains that typically use the low-level platforms will not be stopping at Glasgow Central until further notice.

Alternative Travel Arrangements
In response to the disruption, some ticket acceptance measures have been put in place to assist affected passengers. For instance, Avanti West Coast passengers can use their tickets at no extra cost on LNER services between Edinburgh and London King's Cross. This temporary arrangement aims to mitigate the inconvenience caused by the widespread cancellations.
