A significant fire near Glasgow Central railway station has caused widespread disruption for train passengers, leading to dozens of cancellations on Sunday evening. The blaze, which erupted at a building on Union Street, forced the closure of Scotland's busiest station until further notice, as confirmed by National Rail.
Emergency Response and Impact on Services
Emergency crews continued to battle the fire four hours after it started, impacting all services. More than 60 firefighters are currently working to tackle the large building fire, with 12 fire appliances and three high-reach vehicles mobilised at its height. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 3.46pm on Sunday, 8 March, to reports of a fire affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building.
There are no reported casualties, and crews remain at the scene. However, the fire has severely disrupted train operations, with no trains operating to or from the high-level platforms, and services using the low-level platforms bypassing Glasgow Central entirely.
Passenger Advice and Alternative Arrangements
Passengers are advised to anticipate ongoing disruption on routes that remain operational. In response to the closure, some ticket acceptance measures are in place. For instance, Avanti West Coast passengers can use their tickets at no extra cost on LNER services between Edinburgh and London King's Cross.
National Rail has stated that part of Glasgow Central Station will be closed until further notice, emphasising the need for travellers to check for updates and plan alternative journeys. The incident highlights the vulnerability of critical transport infrastructure to unforeseen events and the importance of robust emergency protocols.
