Italian Airport Strikes Threaten Flight Chaos and Winter Olympics Disruption
The Italian government is urgently negotiating with unions to avert potential flight chaos as airport workers have voted for strike action, with disruptions looming next week. Holidaymakers and travellers have been warned of significant flight interruptions, with strikes scheduled for February 16 and March 7, posing a risk to the ongoing Winter Olympics.
Strike Details and Impact on Airlines
Airline industry staff, including pilots, flight attendants, and ground personnel, are set to walk out on February 16, just days before the Winter Olympics conclude. According to union plans, Vueling and easyJet staff who are members of the USB union will strike between 1pm and 5pm on that day. Meanwhile, other easyJet employees, along with those working for ITA Airways, will take action for the entire day, potentially grounding numerous flights.
Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, indicates that 314 ITA flights are scheduled for February 16, highlighting the scale of potential disruption. Additionally, ground staff and baggage handlers at key airports such as Brescia Montichiari, Milan Linate, and Milan Malpensa are expected to join the strike, further exacerbating travel woes for passengers.
Government Negotiations and Olympic Concerns
Negotiations are ongoing with the Italian government's Strike Guarantee Commission, which has requested that unions change the strike dates to maintain a regular schedule during the Winter Olympics. In a statement reported by Italian news agency Ansa, authorities noted, "In the resolution adopted at yesterday's meeting, the Strike Guarantee Commission notified the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of the concrete risk of harm to freedom of movement during the air transport protests called for February 16 and March 7."
The Commission has proposed rescheduling the strikes to the period between February 24 and March 4 to minimise interference with the international sporting event. However, no agreement has been reached yet, leaving airlines and travellers in limbo. EasyJet and ITA Airways have both confirmed to media outlets that they are awaiting further information on potential postponements and will update customers accordingly.
Broader Strike Actions and Railway Disruptions
Beyond the aviation sector, strike action is also planned for later in the month, adding to the travel chaos. From 9pm on Friday, February 27, Italian state railway staff will walk out for 24 hours, affecting regional, high-speed, and Intercity trains. This coordinated labour unrest underscores broader tensions within Italy's transport infrastructure, with workers advocating for better conditions and pay.
