Government U-turn Allows Late-Night Opening

Pubs across England will be allowed to stay open until 5am on Monday night as the Three Lions face Mexico in an early morning World Cup clash. Sir Keir Starmer made a U-turn on Thursday afternoon to allow the country to cheer on Thomas Tuchel’s side from their local boozer or bar, even though the match is scheduled for 1am. Venues had been previously told they would need to obtain a temporary events license to stay open past regular licensing hours for kick-offs after 10pm. A blanket rule introduced by Home Secretary Shabhana Mahmood allowed pubs to stay open for an extended period, but it only applied to games scheduled between 5pm and 10pm. But in a move welcomed by England fans, pubs and bars will now be allowed to stay open until 5am as the Three Lions face El Tricolor at the Azteca.

Not All Pubs Will Open

However, this does not mean that all pubs will be open. Many will simply be unable to arrange staffing for such a late shift. The Standard has put together a list of the London venues where you can cheer on England as they face Mexico. SPORT London has opened six venues for the round-of-16 clash.
