Lufthansa Pilots Announce Two-Day Strike Over Pension Dispute
Lufthansa pilots, represented by the VC union, are set to stage a significant two-day strike this week, commencing on Thursday, March 12, and continuing through Friday, March 13. This industrial action stems from an ongoing and unresolved dispute concerning pension arrangements, which has escalated despite intermittent negotiations over the past year.
Impact on Flights and Travel Plans
The strike will directly affect both Lufthansa Cargo AG and Lufthansa passenger flights departing from German airports. The industrial action is scheduled to begin at 12:01 AM on March 12 and conclude at 11:59 PM on March 13, potentially causing widespread travel disruption for passengers and cargo operations. However, flights to specific countries in the Middle East will be exempt from the strike due to the ongoing conflict in that region, ensuring some continuity in critical routes.
Union's Stance and Company Response
VC President Andreas Pinheiro has expressed regret over the necessity of this escalation, attributing it to the company's unwillingness to engage in substantive discussions about improving the pension scheme. According to the union, despite talks following a ballot last year, no satisfactory offer has been made to pressure Lufthansa into granting more generous retirement benefits. This lack of progress has led to the decision to proceed with the strike, highlighting the deepening rift between the pilots and the airline management.
The union emphasizes that the strike is a last resort after failed negotiations, aimed at drawing attention to the pilots' demands for better pension conditions. Travelers are advised to check flight statuses and consider alternative arrangements during this period to mitigate potential inconveniences caused by the industrial action.
