Manchester Airport Named UK's Most Complained-About Hub in New Study

Airports are often hotspots for British grumbles, from lengthy queues to exorbitant parking fees, creating stress even for the most composed travellers. However, some airports excel at fostering an atmosphere of frustration more than others. A recent investigation has unveiled the UK's most complained-about airports, shedding light on passenger grievances.

Research Methodology and Key Findings

Conducted by airport transfer platform Mozio, the study analysed online complaint-related searches from travellers over a two-year period, spanning February 2024 to January 2026. The research focused on queries concerning parking, luggage mishaps, and general passenger complaints, providing a comprehensive overview of airport dissatisfaction across the nation.

Top Complained-About Airports Revealed

Manchester Airport emerged as the worst offender, topping the rankings with more than 8,800 complaint-related searches. Despite undergoing a significant £1.3 billion transformation programme over the past decade, passenger frustrations persist. This finding aligns with a 2025 Which? study that also ranked Manchester as the UK's poorest-performing airport.

In second place, London Heathrow recorded 6,600 complaint-related searches. As Europe's busiest airport, forecasting over 85 million passengers in 2026, Heathrow's high volume of complaints is unsurprising given its immense traffic and operational challenges.

Gatwick Airport secured third position with 4,350 complaint-related searches. As the UK's second busiest airport, its inclusion in the top three reflects the correlation between passenger numbers and complaint frequency.

Completing the top five were Bristol and Birmingham airports, indicating that dissatisfaction extends beyond major hubs to regional facilities as well.

Expert Insights and Passenger Advice

Nicole Kerr, CEO at Mozio, commented on the findings, stating, 'With approximately eight in ten Brits planning overseas travel in 2026, our study aims to identify airports where passengers might encounter the most stressful experiences. Manchester Airport's top ranking, despite its modernisation efforts, suggests that transformation alone hasn't alleviated passenger complaints.'

She added, 'As Manchester anticipates a record-breaking year, with over two million travellers in January 2026 alone, it's crucial for airports to prioritise creating a relaxed environment to minimise complaints. Ahead of the busy summer season, travellers across Europe are advised to prepare for potential delays.'

To mitigate travel stress, experts recommend:

  • Arriving two to three hours before departure.
  • Utilising online check-in services.
  • Booking private airport transfers from reputable companies to ensure confirmed bookings and professional drivers, avoiding parking hassles.
