The Mancunian Way, one of the busiest roads in Manchester city centre, will be closed for two days this weekend for an annual safety inspection. The closure will begin at 6am on Saturday, June 27, and will be lifted at 6am on Monday, June 29.
Both sides of the carriageway will be shut from the Chester Road roundabout to Fairfield Street, including all slip roads. Drivers have been warned of significant disruption, and diversion routes will be in place in both directions via Trinity Way, Great Ancoats Street, Bridgewater Viaduct, Whitworth Street West, Whitworth Street, and Fairfield Street.
Essential Maintenance for Safety
Councillor Mandie Shilton Godwin, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: “Because of the tens of thousands of vehicles we see use the Mancunian Way every day, ensuring its proper maintenance and upkeep is essential. Not only to keep traffic flowing, but to keep drivers safe.”
She added: “There will be a level of disruption which is why we’d urge people to plan their journeys ahead and find an alternative route which avoids the closure. Thank you to everyone ahead of your patience as we carry out these essential works.”
Plan Ahead for Weekend Travel
The Mancunian Way carries tens of thousands of vehicles daily, making it a critical artery for Manchester. The closure is expected to cause delays, and motorists are advised to allow extra time or use public transport. The inspection ensures the road remains safe for the high volume of traffic it handles.
