Newcastle United's Stadium Future: Lessons from US Venues
Newcastle Stadium Lessons from US Venues

Newcastle United's stadium future is under scrutiny as the club considers options to increase revenue and improve facilities. Lee Ryder, Chief Newcastle United Writer, travelled 3,350 miles to US World Cup venues, including the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, to gather insights for the Magpies' potential move or renovation.

MetLife Stadium Impressions

Ryder attended the Norway vs Senegal World Cup match at MetLife Stadium, noting the impressive setup that impressed visiting fans. The Norway supporters, numbering thousands, took over Times Square with a Viking Row, making Fox News headlines. MetLife, home to the New York Giants and Jets, is a 16-year-old venue that replaced the old Giants Stadium, which was demolished in 2010 and is now a car park.

Ryder's first visit to the US in 2005 saw England beat Colombia 3-2 at the old Giants Stadium in front of over 58,000 fans. The new MetLife has hosted major events, including the FIFA World Club Cup final in 2025 (Chelsea vs PSG) and two Oasis concerts with 150,000 fans. A staff member said: "People still talk about Oasis fans coming here even now, they drank the place dry."

Stadium Options for Newcastle

Ryder also visited AT&T Stadium and Gillette Stadium, noting that all US venues offer exceptional catering, hospitality, and pre-game areas. A beer costs $18 and a hot dog $8.50, but family areas and indoor play parks justify the expense. For Newcastle, the challenge is balancing tradition with modern revenue generation.

Options include renovating St James' Park or building a new stadium on Leazes Park. Renovation would require a temporary home, possibly Murrayfield. Building on Leazes Park would allow Newcastle to play at St James' during construction and then transition next door. PIF favours this plan, but planning permission is needed.

Lessons from the MetLife

The MetLife's seamless transition from the old Giants Stadium to the new venue is a model for Newcastle. Chronicle Live understands that scenarios like this have been considered for the Leazes Park project. St James' Park would close after a final celebratory season, and the new stadium would open nearby.

As Ryder walked across the old Giants Stadium site, now a car park, he felt a tinge of sadness about what St James' could become. But if Newcastle are serious about competing, a move may be necessary sooner rather than later.
