Aviation Sector Braces for Unprecedented Easter Travel Surge
The aviation industry is gearing up for an exceptionally busy week ahead, with the Easter weekend and school holidays rapidly approaching. A combination of wintry weather conditions across the UK and the impending holiday period has triggered a significant spike in last-minute holiday bookings for the coming week.
Record-Breaking Flight Operations and Passenger Numbers
Across Europe, customers are set to travel on nearly 30,000 flights during the school break, with a staggering 5.2 million seats available. This surge in demand is poised to make this Easter weekend the busiest on record for easyJet, with the airline anticipating unprecedented passenger volumes.
According to data from On the Beach, last-minute Easter holiday bookings have skyrocketed by an impressive 76 per cent this week alone. Industry experts attribute this dramatic increase to a combination of enticing travel deals and the persistently cold weather gripping the United Kingdom, which has motivated many to seek warmer climates.
EasyJet's Expanded Operations and New Market Entrants
During the first Easter travel weekend, passengers will board more than 5,000 easyJet flights as families and individuals seize the opportunity to enjoy spring sunshine and much-needed relaxation. From the UK, the airline plans to operate up to 16,000 flights throughout the Easter period, connecting travellers to destinations offering pleasant spring weather and classic European city breaks.
EasyJet holidays is preparing to welcome over a quarter more customers compared to last year's Easter weekend, reflecting the growing appetite for getaways. Meanwhile, the skies are set to become even busier with London Gatwick airport welcoming five new airlines during the holiday period.
Notably, Jet2 launched its inaugural flight from London Gatwick yesterday, marking the company's first operation from the UK's second largest airport. The initial flight to Tenerife was quickly followed by another to Alicante, establishing Jet2's presence at this major travel hub. The airline has already put flights and holidays for winter 2026/2027 and summer 2027 on sale, indicating long-term strategic planning.
Expanding Airport Operations and Destination Diversity
Gatwick's expansion continues with the addition of Air France, Condor, Eurowings and Animawings to its roster of carriers. In the coming weeks, AirAsia X, Air Arabia and Beijing Capital airlines will also commence operations at the airport. Furthermore, new routes from carriers such as Norwegian and Royal Air Maroc will provide passengers with access to more than 220 destinations worldwide.
While Easter traditionally signals the conclusion of the ski season, some higher-altitude resorts remain open into April, offering opportunities for late-season snow enthusiasts to enjoy winter sports activities.
Popular Destinations and Consumer Trends
According to On the Beach research, the top destinations for British travellers this Easter include Western Mediterranean locations, with Spain and the Canary Islands experiencing notable increases in bookings as holidaymakers opt for familiar and reliable vacation spots.
For those seeking sunshine, Tenerife and Lanzarote continue to rank among the most popular choices, while Spanish mainland favourites Alicante and Malaga maintain strong demand. Greece has emerged as a particularly standout destination, with last-minute bookings surging by 200 per cent week-on-week. Turkey is also witnessing a late booking boom, experiencing a 160 per cent rise in Easter holiday reservations.
Industry Perspectives on the Travel Boom
Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On the Beach, commented: 'Holidays are well and truly back on the menu this Easter, and in true Easter hunt fashion, Brits are finding some seriously good-value deals. Destinations like Greece and Turkey are offering standout value alongside familiar favourites, Spain, the Canaries and Portugal, and with the UK weather showing no signs of improving, it's no surprise we've seen a surge in people snapping up last-minute sunshine breaks.'
Kevin Doyle, easyJet's UK Country Manager, added: 'Every Easter we see more customers choosing easyJet for our unrivalled network, choice, brilliant package holidays and great value – and this year we’re set to fly more than 30,000 flights across Europe to over 140 destinations. Easter marks a welcome chance for families, couples and friends to enjoy a break together, whether that’s a dose of early-spring sunshine or exploring one of Europe’s great cities. We’re continuing to offer even more flying to the destinations that matter most to our customers, always focused on making travel easy.'
The convergence of favourable travel deals, challenging domestic weather conditions, and expanded airline operations has created perfect conditions for what industry analysts predict will be one of the most significant Easter travel periods in recent aviation history.
