Ryanair Announces Major £40 Million Investment at Prestwick Airport
Ryanair has unveiled ambitious expansion plans for Prestwick Airport in South Ayrshire, committing £40 million to develop a new heavy maintenance facility that will generate hundreds of skilled jobs. The investment represents a significant boost for the region's aerospace sector and underscores the airline's growing presence in Scotland.
Substantial Job Creation and Infrastructure Development
The centrepiece of this expansion is the construction of a state-of-the-art, four-bay heavy maintenance hangar spanning 11,938 square metres. This development will increase Ryanair's total maintenance bays at Prestwick from six to ten, establishing it as the airline's largest heavy maintenance facility globally.
The project will create 450 highly-skilled engineering and mechanic positions, alongside 60 valuable apprenticeships. These roles will support Ryanair's expanding fleet operations as the airline targets growth to 800 aircraft and 300 million passengers by 2034.
Government Support and Partnership Funding
The expansion has attracted substantial public sector backing, with the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise contributing £15 million toward the project. The UK Government is providing nearly £5 million specifically for enabling infrastructure, part of a broader £32 million investment in the Prestwick aerospace cluster through the Ayrshire growth deal.
Ryanair Chief Executive Eddie Wilson emphasized the strategic importance of this development, stating: "This new state-of-the-art, four-bay hangar and component workshops will make Prestwick our largest heavy maintenance facility, and a key part of how we will maintain and support our fleet."
Building on Previous Investments
This latest announcement follows Ryanair's £5 million investment in its Prestwick training academy, which opened in October 2024 and created 500 jobs. Together, these developments demonstrate Ryanair's long-term commitment to Scotland's aviation industry and workforce development.
Wilson added: "Together, these investments underline Ryanair's long-term commitment to Scotland, to high-quality engineering and mechanic jobs, and to developing the next generation of aviation talent here in Ayrshire."
Political Welcome and Economic Impact
First Minister John Swinney welcomed the expansion, noting: "I am delighted that Scottish Government investment will support the creation of 450 skilled jobs at Prestwick, which will have a major economic impact in Ayrshire and beyond."
UK Government Minister for Scotland Kirsty McNeill highlighted the broader significance, stating: "This is a fantastic example of significant public sector funding unlocking substantial private sector investment, boosting employment and driving economic renewal in Scotland."
The expansion positions Prestwick Airport as a key maintenance and training hub within Ryanair's European network, while supporting the UK Government's ambition to establish Ayrshire as a leading aerospace centre.
